Grand Union Canal

Marinas

Braunston Bottom Lock, Wharf House Narrowboats
Has a good chandlery and has equipment which appears to be identical to that on Bronington. (2007)

Napton Junction, Wignall Marina
Very helpful.  Did a prompt pumpout for £12 and also let us fill with water and dispose of rubbish without charge. We purchased a 5 litre container of loo blue for £10. (2007)

Shops

Braunston
In the village above the canal, approximately 1 mile above the A45 Bridge (91).  Take the shortcut towards the church across the field on a surfaced path.
Village shop & Post Office (Londis) - newspapers, bread, cakes, milk, freezer, provisions, beer and wine.

Hatton
Between Locks 31 & 32.
Shell garage - newspapers, milk and provisions.

Lapworth
Midway between GU Canal Kingswood Bridge (65) and Stratford Canal Bridge 35, on the B4439.
Village shop - newspapers, milk and limited provisions.

Long Itchington
Newsagent along the path between the garages adjacent to Itchington Bottom Lock (13).
Village shop/Post Office (Co-op) opposite the church approximately 1 mile into the village from A423 Curtle Bridge (25) or Bascote Bridge (27) - newspapers, bread, cakes, milk, freezer, provisions, beer and wine.

Warwick
Adjacent to Bridge 46 - limited local moorings.
Tsco Superstore at the canalside.

Kennet & Avon Canal

Moorings etc

Crofton Lock 60 Water Point
The water point is on the northern side of the canal and is badly positioned very close to the lock.  Water depth is shallow and it is easy for longer boats to get stuck on the bottom.

Bruce Tunnel
There is good mooring on the towpath side of the canal on the western side of the tunnel.

Wilcot
There is pleasant and protected mooring along the towpath between Wilcot Bridge (117) and Bowden's Bridge (119).  Note that the Wilcot Swing Bridge (118) no longer exists, only the abutments remain.

Oxford Canal

Warnings!

King's Sutton Lock 31 About 200 metres south of the lock are the abutments of a dismantled lift bridge.  The eastern abutment is intact but the western abutment has been demolished above the water line but is intact below the water.  When passing you need to consider this site as being as narrow as a normal lift bridge hole.

WiFi

Oxford
Anchor Inn, 50 metres directly east of Aristotle Bridge (240) on Hayfield Road, OX2 6TT, ph 01865 510282.
Ask to use their WiFi access and they will give you the password.  There is no charge.

Upper Heyford
The Barley Mow, 600 metres up the hill from Lock 36 (and Bridge 204) on Sommerton Road, OX25 5LB, ph 01869 232300.  Map
Just ask to use their WiFi access and they will oblige.  There is no charge and no password is required.

Shops

Banbury
The Sommerville supermarket in the Castle Quay has closed.  However, Marks & Spencer in Castle Quay has milk, bread, fruit, vegetables, water, prepared meals etc.
There is a very good Morrisons 200 metres east of Samuelson Bridge (168).  The location is shown on the Banbury map on the GEO Oxford Canal map.  There are good moorings each side of Bridge 168.

Cropredy
Alongside Bridge 153.
Village Shop - newspapers, bread, cakes, milk, freezer and provisions.  An excellent canal side shop which has just about everything, including some chandlery items, but did not have capers to go with our smoked salmon.

Napton Bottom Lock
25 metres below Bridge 113.
Folly Farm Shop - limited newspapers, bread, provisions, milk and gifts.

Moorings etc

Braunston Puddle Banks
Moorings just west of bridge 95.  A pretty spot which is convenient to Braunston. You need to use a plank as there are concrete blocks against
the shore but it is worth it for the setting.

Between Napton & Braunston
Moorings between bridges 100 and 101. Quiet isolated mooring against piling.

Napton
Good moorings at the Bridge Inn near Bridge 111.  Quiet except 9am on a Saturday when all the hireboats are heading back to base.

Stockton
Quiet mooring between bridges 21 and 20, near the marina.  There is a useful road which runs on other side of hedge allowing easy unloading of the boat.
Concrete moorings near bridge 21 necessitate the fenders being lifted up to protect the sides of the boat.

Stratford-on-Avon Canal

Shops

Stratford-on-Avon
High street shops including a Marks & Spencers food hall within 100 yds of the basin.

Wootton Wawen
Moor up on the towpath opposite Anglo-Welsh and descend to the A3400.
Total garage has a very limited stock of more popular Newspapers.
Village shop opposite the church half a mile north of the aquaduct over the A3400 - newspapers, bread, cakes, milk, freezer, provisions, beer and wine.
